Supporting Community and Social Benefit Initiatives

A core principle of the Nu-Phalt ethos is that we should be an active and positive contributor to the communities in which we operate, rather than simply working within them. We are committed to creating meaningful social value by using our people, skills, technical expertise and resources to support organisations that make a positive difference to local communities.

We regularly work alongside charities, community organisations and public services to support projects that benefit the people and communities they serve. From respite and support charities to outdoor access groups and the NHS, we work collaboratively with organisations to understand where our expertise and resources can make a practical difference.

Our approach to social value is focused on creating tangible and lasting benefits. Whether that involves our teams providing specialist knowledge, practical support, plant, equipment or helping to deliver improvements to community facilities and infrastructure, we aim to make a positive contribution that extends beyond our core business activities.

We believe that the skills and experience within Nu-Phalt can be used to support organisations that are making a difference every day. By working closely with our communities and the organisations within them, we aim to build positive relationships, support worthwhile initiatives and leave a lasting legacy through the work we deliver.

For Nu-Phalt, social value is about more than meeting a contractual requirement. It is about using what we do, and what we are good at, to support the communities in which our people live and work.

Phyllis Tuckwell Paths Project, Beacon Centre (2026)

Patients and families visiting Phyllis Tuckwell’s Beacon Centre in Guildford can now enjoy safe, wheelchair-friendly access to the beautiful garden there, thanks to a major pathway improvement by Nuphalt Contracting.

Phyllis Tuckwell not only cares for patients at the end of life but also supports them and their loved ones earlier in their illness.

When our team heard about this, we offered to re-lay the paths for free. Following the green landscape and preparation works, Nuphalt Contracting removed the existing tarmac and regulated the stone along the old path, laying 120m2 of our innovative Nu-Flex material.

Making the Beacon Centre path safer and more inclusive, especially for hospice users with limited mobility, was our top priority. Nu-Flex was an ideal choice of product for the site: its 50% recycled rubber content and porous drainage properties mean it provides excellent grip for tires and walking sticks all year round, affording wheelchair and mobility aid users plenty of control whatever the season.

North Downs Way National Trail (2025)

In partnership with the Putting Down Routes project, Nuphalt Contracting was proud to deliver vital accessibility improvements to the North Downs Way National Trail in Wye, Kent. Working alongside Kent County Council’s Public Rights of Way team and the Kent Downs National Landscape team, we helped restore a steep and heavily worn section of bridleway through The Junipers — a steep woodland section of the trail.

The route had become overgrown, uneven, and obstructed by exposed roots, posing a serious challenge to anyone not on foot or physically able. Our task was to make the path safer and more inclusive, especially for users with limited mobility.

We achieved this by laying our innovative nu-flex surfacing solution — a recycled, porous, and flexible material that adapts to uneven terrain and allows water to pass through, preventing the risk of puddling and frost. With its high grip and tensile strength, nu-flex is ideal for steep inclines like those at The Junipers, offering a durable, low-maintenance surface that’s safer for all users, including cyclists, buggies, mobility scooters, and all-terrain wheelchairs. This created a step-free, more accessible route as part of a phased effort to improve connectivity to the Wye Downs and the broader Kent Downs National Landscape.

Nuphalt Contracting’s contribution supports the Putting Down Routes project’s long-term goal to open the outdoors up to more people. This can be achieved by using dynamically different materials like nu-flex to future-proof public rights of way across the region.

St Ebbas Therapy Garden (2024)

Nuphalt Contracting are proud to have completed the construction of a wheelchair accessible path in the therapy garden at St Ebba’s Hospital in Epsom Surrey. This project was a joint venture with Surrey County Council.

Surrey County Council Green Health and Wellbeing programme have been hard at work developing a therapy garden for young people with mental health concerns and adults with learning disabilities at St Ebba’s Hospital in Epsom. This garden is a vital outdoor space for staff, residents, and visitors alike, offering a tranquil retreat amongst the greenery.

Nuphalt Contracting came aboard the project to install a pathway suitable for all user groups at no cost to Surrey County Council or St Ebba’s Hospital. Nuphalt Contracting’s contribution supports the Putting Down Routes project’s long-term goal to open the outdoors up to more people
